I stink at riddles! I have an idea but too chicken to post my answer.
Mine isn't legally of age yet, but the other characteristics apply.
Being the one of the wisest (Mammy, stay away from the keyboard) citizens of Dogpatch, I's agunna hazard a guess at yourn riddle - a college freshman.
pappy- you ahve hit the nail on the head. You win the black star of India. It will be mailed to you within the next 6-8 weeks.
I have one student in particular (several that fit into this category) who approached me 5 days before the last day to withdraw from a course and asked if I thought he ought to withdraw. I could not remember exactly where he stood with his grade, but I did know it was a failing grade and that he had excessive absences.
In short, I pointed him in the direction of the Registrar.
After our conversation, I returned to my office and looked up his record. The poor kid had not turned in a single assignment (9 weeks into the semester).
Who should show up to class the following week? Bingo! He had not withdrawn and now has no hope of passing the class. He might as well go out and enjoy himself until next semester.
Oh, let me add, his academic advisor suggested withdrawing from the class.
Lame! That is very generalized and stereotypical. Lame!
p.s. I want my football back!
hey jude!- This is only one of six or seven of my 220 students. I was not trying to stereotype. So the football stays.
Lyle- And if we worked at the same school, I would get the call from his mommy or daddy insisting we give the money back for the class!
carblemarble- That has always been one thing that bugs. Why parents won't allow their kids to accept responsibility for their own actions I will never understand. Fortuneately, I don't have to deal with angry parents because of the way our system is set up. I'm sure my boss gets an earful every semester.
As a parent of a college freshman, I would like to thank you for clarifying that this is not the norm and that it is just one of a few. I also would like to say that, yes, I agree that at this age parents need to allow their children to accept the consequences of their actions. It is very hard to be a parent of an adult child because the consequences are much harsher as they get older and you would like to still be able to protect them but how embarrassing to have your parents get involved when you're in college!
I think the new term/buzz word is "Helicopter Parents" Parents that hover over and shadow every move their child makes.
